WHEN JEWS MET JAZZ
When Jews Met Jazz (WJMJ) is a weekly program by a jazz enthusiast, exploring the history and evolution of jazz through a distinctly Jewish lens—where music, identity, and history intersect.
The series begins before the birth of jazz in late-19th-century New Orleans, and traces its journey through to the present day, examining the social, cultural, political, and economic forces that shaped this extraordinary musical tradition.
When Jews Met Jazz explores how Jews impacted jazz culture & shaped its development.
Taking a broad view, the series looks beyond performers alone. It explores the contributions of Jewish musicians, lyricists, arrangers, bandleaders, managers, critics, record-label founders, club owners, promoters, and educators—first in the United States, then in Israel, UK, Australia and ultimately across the world.
Each episode features in-depth conversations with musicians, scholars, and industry professionals from around the globe. Guests include historians, musicologists, ethnomusicologists, sociologists, psychologists, and cultural commentators, who help unpack the rich, complex tapestry that emerges when jazz and Jewish life converge.
